Born in Los Angeles, California on June 8, 1968, Jones' earliest exposure to music was through his father, Willie Jones II, an accomplished and notable jazz pianist, who offered guidance and inspiration to his gifted son. Dedicated to the further development of his skills, the younger Jones spent the next few years working diligently with acclaimed drummers and music instructors and began performing with distinguished musicians by the time he was in his teens. He completed his academic training after receiving a full scholarship to the California Institute of the Arts where he studied under the tutelage of the legendary Albert "Tootie" Heath. Before he was a semifinalist in the 1992 Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition, Jones co-founded jazz band Black Note. Influenced by the rich soulful energy of the West Coast bop movement, Black Note's hard-swing sound propelled them to first place in the prestigious John Coltrane Young Artist Competition in 1991. Jones contributed his skillfulness as both musician and producer on all four Black Note recordings: 43rd & Degnan and L.A. Underground (World Stage Records), Jungle Music (Columbia) and Nothin' But the Swing (Impulse!). By 1994, the band had toured Europe and across the U.S. and was the opening act for Wynton Marsalis.

Near the end of 1994, while Jones was reaching for a higher level of drumming dexterity, he gained the privilege of playing sideman to the renowned vibist Milt Jackson, where Jones learned the importance of pacing and sensitivity. Meanwhile, his musical career continued to unfold. From 1995 through 1998, he was a member of Arturo Sandoval's band and is featured on Sandoval's GRAMMY® award winning release Hot House (N2K). Subsequently, Jones recorded with Horace Silver on Jazz Has a Sense of Humor (Impulse!).

From 1998-2005, Jones was a member of Roy Hargrove's Quintet and is featured on Roy Hargrove's CD releases on Verve: Moment To Moment, Hard Groove, Nothing Serious and RH Factor's Distractions. Jones can be heard on a host of recordings including Kurt Elling's GRAMMY® nominated Night Moves (Concord) and Eric Reed's Here (Max Jazz). Jones has worked with Sonny Rollins, Ernestine Anderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, Frank Wess, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, Houston Person, Billy Childs, Eric Reed, Ryan Kisor, Eric Alexander, Bill Charlap, Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock and Hank Jones. In 2000, Jones' released his debut CD, Vol 1...Straight Swingin' on his own label, WJ3 Records. He continues to reveal his proficiency as a composer as well as a producer on Vol II...Don't Knock The Swing (2002); Volume III (2007); WE 2 (2008), a trombone and piano recording featuring Wycliffe Gordon and Eric Reed; and Jones' latest release The Next Phase (2010).

“De Jazz van het Bankroet”
een filmproject van Frank Herrebout met live Jazzmuziek.

In opdracht van de "Stichting de Jazz van het Bankroet" heeft Roxy Movies in 2006 het in 1920 geschreven dadaïstische filmscenario ‘De Jazz van het Bankroet' geproduceerd als een multimediaal filmproject, een coproductie met het Filmmuseum.

Het scenario van ‘De Jazz van het Bankroet' is geschreven door de Vlaamse dichter Paul van Ostaijen die na de eerste wereldoorlog op 22-jarige leeftijd zijn land moest ontvluchten en in het Berlijn van de jaren 1918-1920 terecht kwam.

Een tijd van maatschappelijke en culturele revoluties waarvan het dadaïstische werk de 'Jazz van het Bankroet' de weerspiegeling is.

De multimediale voorstelling ‘De Jazz van het Bankroet' volgt het door de dadaïsten uitgevonden procédé van de collage en gebruikt daarvoor ‘ready made filmfootage', ‘ready made sounds' en een ontregelende bruïtistische performance.

Dirk Godts was jarenlang manager van Toots Thielemans, die bijna 88 wordt en afgelopen weekend op het podium stond van het Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
Op het moment van gebeuren was Carl Symons een reportage aan het draaien voor de commerciele televisiezender VTM. De hele ploeg was zeer zwaar aangedaan door het gebeuren. Toots Thielemans en de muzikanten verlieten het concertgebouw in shock.
Dirk Godts, afkomstig uit Schoten had een grote passie voor zijn werk en legde zich toe op het welzijn en het comfort van de mensen rondom hem. Hij laat zijn vrouw, zoon en vier dochters, moeder, broer en zussen achter.

Onderstaande foto is genomen op 18 december 2009. Dirk (rechts op de foto) is in gesprek met fotograaf Jos Knaepen. Vanwege de slechte situatie op de Belgische wegen als gevolg van de sneeuwval was Toots niet aanwezig.

ZeelandDoc is ook een podium. Voor schrijvers en dichters. Fotografen en vormgevers. Kunstenaars en andere creatieven. Jong of iets ouder, maar in elk geval veelbelovend en met veel talent.

ZeelandDoc laat zien dat Zeeland leeft, zich ontwikkelt en toekomst heeft…
Dat deze provincie meer is dan zon, zee en strand. Dat Zeeland midden in de wereld staat. En dat de wereld onmiskenbaar zichtbaar is in het Zeeland van nu.

Een nieuwe lente, een nieuw document!
ZeelandDoc verschijnt niet, zoals zijn voorganger, in het najaar, maar in het voorjaar. In maart 2010 dus, tijdens de nationale Boekenweek met als thema ‘Jong zijn’. Mooier kan het niet. ZeelandDoc is (piep)jong en ‘jong zijn in Zeeland’ komt vast aan bod in deze eerste uitgave die feestelijk zal worden gepresenteerd op een plaats die er toe doet in de Boekenweek.
Op 7 maart in De Drvkkery in Middelburg de presentatie van het eerste exemplaar.

Buying a jazz-cd at It records will be past tense. What a pity but where on earth can you buy a cd with dedicated and well-informed staff members with expertise about jazz music??? Closing It records is writing history.

It-records is one of the last independent record shops in the currently very difficult music branch and has been one of the leading shops in the field for almost 25 years. Due to its expertise and service, It-records has been able to welcome a host of customers and artists in its shop at the Lijnbaan (Donner /Selexyz bookstore, third floor) in Rotterdam and at the North Sea Jazz festival.

Having been specialist in jazz, world, pop and numerous other music trends, It-records regrettably has to put an end to its activities on 31 January 2010. This will certainly be a big loss for music and the culture of Rotterdam.

Economic considerations are the main reason for closing down the shop with the largest and broadest collection and the widest know-how in the Rijnmond area. Besides, the customer’s spending behaviour and downloading in general have led to this decision.

It-records has greatly contributed to the successful cd sales of artists such as Eric Vloeimans, Benjamin Herman/New Cool Collective and Jules Deelder, but also, for example, that of Buena Vista Social club, Carel Kraayenhof and Putumayo World cd 's.

The It-records staff members are known to have played an advisory role in programming the annual North Sea jazz festival.

It records is one of the producers of the “Aangenaam Jazz” CD, which sold more than 45,000 copies annually.

It-records is selling out its wide collection of thousands of cd’s and dvd’s at considerable discounts and will do so until the 1st of February 2010.

It-records would like to thank all its customers for the many years of frequent visits and their loyal support and hopes that the music will go on for ever…

Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas, he began his professional career playing tenor saxophone in Oakland, California.

He moved to New York City in 1961 after playing with rhythm and blues bands. He received his nickname "Pharoah" from Sun Ra, with whom he was performing. He came to prominence playing with John Coltrane's band, starting in 1965, as Coltrane began adopting the avant-garde jazz of Albert Ayler, Ra and Cecil Taylor. Sanders first performed on Coltrane's Ascension (recorded in June 1965), then famously on their dual-tenor recording Meditations (recorded in November 1965). After this Sanders joined Coltrane's final quintet, usually performing very lengthy, dissonant solos. Coltrane's later style was strongly influenced by Sanders. Amiri Baraka lays claim naming him Pharoah in an early sixties Downbeat review upon hearing him introduce himself as Farrell Sanders and thinking he said "Pharaoh Sanders."
