Een (jazz-)standard is een nummer dat zo bekend is bij het publiek en de muzikanten dat het tot standaardrepertoire van de jazz behoort. Bij jamsessies zijn die standards vaak het vertrek- en eindpunt, het thema, waarop de improvisatie is gebaseerd. In eerste instantie gaat het vaak om songs uit populaire musicals van het begin van de vorige eeuw. Later komen daar ook "klassieke" jazzcomposities bij van de groten van de jazz. En tegenwoordig kunnen ook pop- en rocksongs het schoppen tot jazzstandard. Van "All the things you are" via "Body and soul" tot "You go to my head", en van "Blackbird" via "Exit music" tot "River man"... de lijst mogelijke jazzstandards is bijna eindeloos, al bestaat er een consensus over ongeveer 3000 titels.
Radio 1 (VRT) heeft daaruit een longlist van 150 songs gekozen. Tot vorige week kon gestemd worden voor de favoriete standards.
